Perennials
Tuesdays — Jan 15 to Mar 25 - 1pm to 4pm ~ 10 weeks / 30 hours — $450
This course is your chance to go to the next level in gardening. It offers you a thorough knowledge of the core 200 perennials grown in our area. This knowledge will allow you to plant complex, satisfying gardens in a number of different conditions. We will cover plant names, best varieties, growing conditions, bloom time and touch on best plant combinations.
Ecological Garden Care
'with much less work & superior results'
Thursdays — Feb 7 to Mar 6 - 1pm to 4pm ~ 5 weeks /15 hours — $225
A completely new environmental approach to garden care that is much less work and produces fantastic results. We will cover how to create a nutritious balanced soil (latest research), how to compost, use organic fertilizers and sprays and when and how to pinch, deadhead and divide. As well we will cover basic design considerations as it pertains to garden care.
Evergreens
Saturdays — Jan 19 and Jan 26 - 9am to 12pm ~ 6 hours — $90
After being way over exposed in the 60's and 70's and loudly rejected, evergreens are back. Let us show you how to use them judiciously, integrated with deciduous shrubs for beauty, punctuation and winter colour. The course will hugely expand your palate of usable evergreens give you best selections, growing conditions, culture and how to keep them under control.
Hardy Shrubs
Saturdays — Feb 2 to Feb 23 - 9am to12pm ~ 4 weeks / 12 hours — $180
Tired of referring to everything woody in the garden as bushes? Learn to tell a Tsuga from a Thuja. This course will cover all shrubs ordinary and extraordinary, hardy to our zone. Also included are small trees suitable for mixed borders. Learn how, when and where to plant, pruning, flowering times, scent and good companion plants.
Soil
Saturday Mar 1 — 9am — 4pm (includes lunch) ~ 6 hours — $100
Garden success is predicated 90% on the qualities of your soil. This course will give you a brief but thrilling analysis of how 'good' soils work and how to ensure that no matter what you are starting with you will know how to create a super nutritious soil, a feast for your plants.
Woodlands
Thursdays — Mar 20 to Apr 3 - 1pm to 4pm ~ 3 weeks / 9 hours - $135
Learn techniques for planting successfully in rooty, shady conditions. We will cover a brief survey of under-story trees and shrubs including some with good flower and amazing fall colour. Add interest and excitement with spring ephemerals, ferns, ground covers, variegation and a surprisingly large array of shade loving perennials, some of them brand new.
The Controlling Hand
Saturdays — Mar 29 to April 12 - 9am to 12pm ~ 3 weeks / 9 hours - $135
Planting a garden is an art. Keeping it looking good over time is perhaps an even greater one. We will cover deadheading to encourage blooms, pinching to contain size and create more flowers and dividing to maintain vigour and create more plants. Also included is a 'quickie' pruning course that will cover most pruning situations in your beds.
Xeriscaping (dry soil gardening)
Tuesdays — Apr 8 and Apr 15 - 1pm to 4pm ~ 6 hours - $90
With droughts starting in early spring and persisting through the summers, and forecasters describing this as a trend, knowledge of how to plant in extreme dry conditions is now essential. This course will cover all the plants, especially grasses that will thrive in these conditions. We will also discuss various water conserving strategies.
Grasses

Thursdays — Apr 10, 17 and 24 - 1pm to- 4pm ~ 3 weeks / 9 hours $135
In the past few years, given their beauty especially in motion, grasses have moved from being a garnish to being the main meal in many gardens. This is an exciting development. This course will acquaint you with grasses and a supporting cast of other perennials that mingle beautifully with them. We will touch briefly also on how best to use grasses in the design of your garden and also how to plant and nurture them.

Garden Teas

Come and stroll David Warburton’s gardens and with Susan Elliotson as your guide, learn to identify and pick culinary and medicinal herbs. Constructed Ponds and Streams

Basic Rug Hooking

Martina Lesar is a Canadian fiber artist and rug designer. Martina Lesar’s class runs over 2 full days. It is an excellent introduction to primitive rug hooking for beginners hoping to explore this traditional Canadian craft. Everyone will be supplied with a rug hooking frame to keep, and all materials needed to make a splendid, colourful 12x12 inch mat. The frame alone is worth $60.00, so the price of the 2 day class reflects this. Includes lunch both days, and all the rug hooking materials needed $175.
